4 Everyday Things You Think Are Healthy But Really Aren’t

Most of us try on a day to day basis to live in the best and most healthful way we know how. Of course, this “know-how” can change over time as we learn and discover more. People are constantly making discoveries that things they used to think were healthy, are actually bad for you. Here are some household, everyday things many people use without a second thought that you may want to take heed of:

1. Humidifier

Humidifiers are used often in the wintertime, esp for those who are prone to respiratory issues. When the temperatures drop, heaters are used, and all of this can cause dry air, which is extremely irritating for our skin, eyes and sinuses. However, humidifiers can cause their own issues as well. If you don’t clean it out thoroughly as needed, you could actually be receiving toxic droplets from them in the air you’re breathing. This can be downright dangerous for those who do suffer from respiratory issues. So humidifiers end up being a two edged sword.

2. Blender

Health-minded people tend to love their blenders. Blenders are a staple in healthy kitchens to make daily health foods such as smoothies, whole juices, healthy dressings etc. However, it is crucial that you wash your blender thoroughly, because dirty blenders can harbor all kinds of nasty germs that can make you very sick, such as e. coli, salmonella, listeria, etc. So be sure to keep your blender sparkling clean.

3. Antibacterial Soap

Antibacterial soap is in overuse these days. The FDA has recently finally acknowledged that they can be dangerous, and have banned certain ingredients such a triclosan in them that are bad for you. However, many of them are still on the market. Are they really necessary? The thing is, antibacterial soap kills bacteria, but not viruses. Many colds, flu and other types of ailments are caused by viruses, not bacteria. In addition to that fact, there are studies out there that conclude that the ingredients in antibacterial soaps cause cancer. Simple and thorough handwashing with regular soap is proven to get rid of germs very effectively, so do you really need antibacterial soap in your house?

4. Whitening Toothpaste

Sure, we all want whiter pearly whites. But what’s really in a whitening toothpaste? Turns out, they contain gritty substances that could inevitably scrub off your tooth enamel, making your teeth more sensitive and prone to damage. This may make your teeth look whiter in the short run, but in the long run, you will have problems down the road. So you may want to rethink using whitening toothpaste.
