This Simple, Yet Unusual Drink Will Chase Your Winter Blues Away
Seasonal depression rates are in full swing right now, as we are at the tail end of another winter. Long periods of cold, dark weather has long been known for bringing on onsets of depression, and may worsen the symptoms of those who were already struggling with it.
Besides waiting for the sun to start chasing the winter blues away, are there other things we can do to beat depression in the winter time?
There are several things to try, but one that not many have heard about is a simple concoction that not many people know about. It contains turmeric, which may turn out to be one of the least talked about yet most potent natural cure for various health conditions.
Turmeric is a super food, a root that has traditionally been used in Asia as a non spicy curry-type flavoring and rich yellow coloring agent in culinary practices, but also as a medicinal herb. It possesses many beneficial qualities. It is rich in antioxidants, making it a great cancer fighter. It is also anti-bacterial and anti-viral. It is even anti-inflammatory, which makes it helpful for brain health and lowers the risk of heart disease. All of this has been known for hundreds of years in countries such as India and China.
Now, we find out that it has great potential for tackling depression as well. In fact, several recent studies show that components in turmeric has the ability to manage depression symptoms better than any conventional prescription medicines.
In one clinical trial, the active ingredient in turmeric (called, curcumin) was discovered to show equal effects on patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) as fluoxetine, (the generic form of Prozac), which is the most common drug that is prescribed for mood disorders. But the amazing thing is, curcumin did not leave any side effects, unlike Prozac.
According to Dr. Ajay Goel, study co-author from Baylor University Medical Center’s Baylor Research Institute and Charles A Sammons Cancer Center, this is indeed a new and surprising way to use this natural “medicine”. The way it works it that curcumin’s powerful anti-inflammatory properties fight against inflammation in the brain of people with depression. Those with depression generally have high levels of brain inflammation. Additionally, Dr. Goel said that curcumin stimulates neurogenesis, or the production of new brain cells. Depression patients tend to have really low levels of neurogenesis, which means they make few new brain cells compared to those with no history of depression.
You can easily add turmeric to your life by using it to spice up your dishes, as even doing this much can greatly reduce the inflammation in your body.
However, for those who are struggling with depression, here is a tasty drink to try. When consumed daily, it will do wonders to lift your spirits and fight your depression, with absolutely zero side effects.
Here is the recipe for this miracle drink:
