Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate. In fine, white powder form, baking soda has a host of impressive qualities. It is antiseptic, anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

Here are some of the top ways in which this natural and extremely cheap ingredient can be useful in your life:

1. Cure rashes and skin irritations.
Because baking soda is anti-inflammatory, it can help with skin rashes, irritations and itching. Put up to 1 cup of baking soda in your bathtub and soak in it for 10 minutes a day. To treat a specific area, mix together a 1:3 ratio of water and baking soda, and apply the mixture to the area that needs it. Leave it on for several minutes, then wash it off with water. However, if your skin is extremely damaged, avoid baking soda as it can be abrasive in texture.

2. Whiten your teeth.
Mix a little baking soda in with your toothpaste on your brush each night and brush as usual. You will find that it may eliminate stains and plaque. Be careful not to overdo it as baking soda may break down enamel if you’re brushing too vigorously.

3. Eliminate body odor
Because baking soda has properties that help it absorb odors, it can be used very effectively as an ingredient in an underarm deodorant solution. To do this, mix equal parts of corn starch and baking soda together and stir it into some coconut oil until you get a texture that is good for applying under your arms. Apply as needed.

4. Sunburn relief
When you have a sunburn, baking soda can bring you great relief. It has the ability to calm irritated skin. Try using a cupful of baking soda in your bathrub and soaking in it for 10 minutes, or dip a washcloth into mixture of water and 1 tbsp of baking soda, then apply the washcloth to your sunburn after wringing out the excess water.

5. Replace your shampoo.
Yes, you read that right. Mixing a tbsp of baking soda in a cupful of water makes a great natural alternative to shampoo. It will effectively remove the grease (and dandruff!) from your hair without any dangerous added chemicals or toxins.
